We’ve Got a Blind Spot

We humans have an innate blind spot. We are flawed. Like a plastic toy who fancies himself a cosmic Superhero we are delusional. But we can’t see it. From the Garden of Eden to the modern elementary school playground, the protests can be heard. “I didn’t do it!” “She made me do it!” “The devil made me do it!” In mediation, an adult human being who appears to be fully developed will insist, in bitter, angry tones, “I am not verbally abusive.” A long time churchgoer who fancies himself a scholar of sorts will stubbornly insist, “If the King James Version [a translation of the Bible completed in 1611] was good enough for St. Paul [a Christian preacher who lived during the time of Christ], then it’s good enough for me!” Of course, those of us who smile condescendingly at these statements reveal our own sense of superiority, privately priding ourselves for our skill at recognizing anachronistic dogmatics. Despite the years of secular humanist rhetoric and behaviorist crusades for greater “self esteem”, we must face the fact that we’re plagued with a serious case of moral and spiritual blindness.
